Asia to US Freight Rates Send Mixed Signals for Chemical Buyers

November 4, 2026 Effective: November 4, 2026

Container freight rates are sending mixed signals, while chemical tanker costs are rising on several routes. Here’s what the late October update means for chemical buyers reviewing shipping options, delivery timelines and total delivered costs.

Late October freight data showed an uneven picture for chemical supply chains. Some container shipping benchmarks declined, while others increased. Chemical tanker rates also moved higher across several major routes, according to ICIS’s October 30 report.

Drewry’s October 29 assessment recorded a 3% weekly decline in its World Container Index, bringing the composite rate to $4,429 per 40-foot container. Rates on its tracked routes from Shanghai varied by destination.

These figures are Drewry’s route benchmarks for October 29, 2026.

The wider container market showed different movements. ICIS reported that Freightos’s weekly Asia to US rates increased 3% to the West Coast and 9% to the East Coast. The differing readings mean buyers should be cautious about interpreting a decline in one benchmark as a reduction across the market.

Capacity remained a factor. Drewry reported six cancelled sailings scheduled for the following week, compared with five in the reporting week. Although easing US import demand could put downward pressure on prices, fewer available sailings could still limit booking options.

For liquid chemical shipments, ICIS reported higher tanker freight rates from the US Gulf to Europe, Brazil and India. Rates to Asia were broadly steady. This distinction matters when assessing shipping costs for products moving through different transport modes.

For chemical procurement teams, our takeaway is practical. Review the route, shipment type, booking window and total delivered cost before adjusting purchasing plans. A lower container benchmark alone does not establish what a particular chemical shipment will cost or when it will arrive.

Buyers preparing upcoming orders should confirm current quotations and delivery timelines against production needs. At California Chemical, we welcome conversations about your product requirements, order volumes and delivery destinations to help you plan your next purchase.
