CalFin AlumDe-Smut AL300 FE
Chrome-free liquid de-smutter and deoxidizer for aluminum surface preparation
CalFin AlumDe-Smut AL300 FE is a chrome-free, liquid de-smutter and deoxidizer formulated for wrought and extruded aluminum alloys. The strongly acidic, fluoride-containing formulation is used to remove smut and oxidation from aluminum surfaces following etching and prepare them for subsequent finishing operations. It is suitable for surface preparation before anodizing, conversion coating, resistance welding, bright dipping, and zincate treatment prior to plating. The product is particularly suited to finishing operations where chromated de-smutters are undesirable due to pollution or wastewater-disposal considerations. It is not recommended for high-silicon aluminum alloys or castings.

Why Choose Our CalFin AlumDe-Smut AL300 FE
Chrome-Free Surface Preparation
Designed as a non-chromated alternative for aluminum de-smutting and deoxidizing, the product helps prepare treated surfaces for subsequent finishing operations while supporting applications where chromated chemistry is unsuitable.
- Chrome-free liquid formulation
- Designed for wrought and extruded aluminum alloys
- Removes smut and oxidation following etching
- Suitable for pre-treatment before multiple finishing processes
Consistent Processing for Aluminum Finishing
The product is designed for controlled processing within defined concentration, temperature, and treatment-time ranges, allowing finishing operations to establish a bath suitable for their specific aluminum surface preparation requirements.
- Recommended concentration of 10–20% by volume
- perating temperature of 70–100 °F (21–38 °C)
- Treatment time of 2–30 minutes
- Air agitation can help reduce processing time
- Bath concentration can be monitored through titration
Supports Multiple Downstream Finishing Operations
Effective de-smutting and deoxidizing is an important step between aluminum etching and subsequent surface treatments. CalFin AlumDe-Smut AL300 FE can be incorporated into established aluminum finishing sequences before several downstream processes.

Applications
Aluminum Surface De-Smutting After Etching
CalFin AlumDe-Smut AL300 FE is used after aluminum etching to remove residual smut and oxidation from the surface. This prepares wrought and extruded aluminum components for subsequent finishing steps and helps establish an appropriate surface condition for downstream treatment.
Preparation for Anodizing Operations
The product can be incorporated into aluminum finishing processes before anodizing. By serving as a de-smutting and deoxidizing step following etching, it helps prepare the aluminum surface for the subsequent anodizing operation.
Pre-Treatment for Conversion Coatings
CalFin AlumDe-Smut AL300 FE can be used as part of an aluminum surface preparation sequence before conversion coating. Its role is to deoxidize and de-smut the substrate following etching before the conversion treatment is applied.
Preparation for Resistance Welding
For aluminum processing operations involving resistance welding, the product can be used as part of the surface preparation cycle. De-smutting and deoxidizing the aluminum provides a clean surface condition before the welding operation.
Zincate Treatment Prior to Plating
The product can be incorporated into aluminum finishing sequences before zincate treatment when preparing substrates for plating. It provides a de-smutting and deoxidizing step between etching and subsequent surface-treatment processes.
Aluminum Finishing & Bright Dip Preparation
CalFin AlumDe-Smut AL300 FE can be used in aluminum finishing operations before bright dipping. Its application within the treatment sequence helps remove smut and oxidation after etching before the next finishing process.
